The Comic Art Teaching and Study Workshop Collection at Fondren

Our collection of original comic art and important vintage comic books continues to grow. The Comic Art Teaching and Study Workshop at the Woodson Research Center Special Collections & Archives at Rice University is home to dozens of pages of original ink-on-paper drawings and a small but mighty collection of vintage comic books, including the complete run of the MAD comic.

The rare art collection features some of American history’s most famous cartoon characters. The donated form the core of a new collection housed in Fondren Library’s Woodson Research Center. Pieces donated by Lewis and Vera Kaminester include a three-panel Mickey Mouse comic strip by Walt Disney, a Bil Keane “Family Circus” illustration and multiple works from Chic Young’s famed “Blondie” series.
