overlap(land): Comics made in Finalnd

The Comic Art Teaching at Study Workshop at Rice University is pleased to announce a new exhibition, held at the Emergency Room. Overlap(land) is an exhibition dedicated to the vibrant comics scene in Finland.

This exhibition is divided into two parts: sketches by comics artists who participated in Comic Blast, a unique residency program, and the second is a more historical reflection on Finnish comics.

Comic Blast was a 4-week long residency for comic artists from all over the world and held at the Arteles Arts Center in rural Finland. The works on view are sketches by participating artists drawn on pages ripped from a shared notebook.

Participating artists:
Maysam Barza (Iran)
Jessica Bosworth Smith (South Africa)
Nas Hoosen (South Africa)
Jacqueline Huskisson (Canada)
Jonathan McBurnie (Australia)
Fatemeh Mohamadi (Iran)
David Ross (USA)
Emily Schulert (USA)
Christopher Sperandio (USA)
Emilie St.Hilaire (Canada)
Stanley Wany (Canada)

Finland has a very active contemporary comics scene. The more historical works on display are a cross-section of both vintage and contemporary comics. Of particular note are the works by Tommi Musturi (b. 1975). Musturi is perhaps the best known Finnish comics artist internationally, and is a founding member of the collective Kutikuti, who produce the monthly comics publication Kuti, which is distributed internationally by subscription, several of which are on display here, along with Musturi’s most recent comics, FUTURE, which are psychedelic mediations on space and time.

You can see the exhibition now through October 31, 2018, by appointment. Please contact Associate Professor Christopher Sperandio to arrange a visit.
